Elizabeth Barnes
I have been working in the education and community service settings for over twenty five years. It is through my combined experiences of raising a large family, my many years as a foster and adoptive parent that I have gained insight into all aspects of our school systems, the support services that are available, and how to effectively advocate for a child’s needs, all the while building and maintaining strong and healthy relationships between schools, families, and other dedicated professionals who may be involved in the life of a child. I strongly believe that every child has a right to an equal opportunity to learn in an environment that meets their needs. My role at Kanata Learning Centre allows me to use my experience, knowledge and passion to help those who need it most; children and youth who are struggling to get their academic, emotional and social needs met. I am able to offer support and information to parents as they navigate the school system. I help parents understand their child’s Individual Education Plan (IEP) in order to help them advocate for services and ensure the appropriate supports are in place in the school setting. My background in linguistics and language acquisition has led to my interest in the literacy process. I am a literacy specialist with training in several reading intervention programs, including the Orton Gillingham approach, and the Neuralign Reading Intervention.
Baylee Tran
Hello, I’m Baylee! I graduated from the University of Ottawa with a degree in Biomedical Sciences and I am currently pursuing a second degree in Nursing. Over the years, I’ve had the opportunity to volunteer with the Red Cross and with different units at the Heart Institute, which strengthened both my compassion and dedication to helping others. I have a strong passion for working with children and love supporting their learning and growth. I’m excited to bring my academic background and caring nature into my work, and I look forward to helping kids explore new ideas and build their confidence. In my free time, I enjoy hiking, cooking, and baking.
Baylee has completed training in interventions for children and adolescents with Autism, ADHD, Sensory or Emotional Challenges. Baylee is also trained to help your child learn how to access the curriculum through a variety of technology resources available to them at school through their individual education plans (IEPs).

Hi! My name is Emma. I recently completed my fourth year at Queen's University, where I am working toward my Honours Bachelor of Arts in French Studies and Sociology alongside a Concurrent Education degree. I hold a DELF B2 certification in French. I have teaching experience across a range of settings, including special education schools in the UK and four years as a Kumon instructor. I am passionate about helping students build confidence in Math, French, and English, and love finding the approach that meets each child where they are, because no two learners are the same and every child deserves to feel capable and supported. I believe every student deserves a warm, inclusive space where they feel safe to ask questions, make mistakes, and grow. I am currently finishing my Bachelor of Education in the junior/intermediate division at the University of Ottawa. I have experience working with children in various roles, including educational assistant, student teacher, and community support worker in group homes serving at-risk youth with diverse abilities. During my recent student teaching placement, I instructed intermediate Math, and the Arts, while also supporting students as a resource teacher in English, Science, and Life Skills, gaining broad classroom and student-support experience. My teaching philosophy is grounded in creating inclusive, supportive, and engaging learning environments where all students feel valued, connected, and empowered to succeed. Through hands-on, inquiry-based learning and ongoing critical reflection, I strive to foster academic achievement, curiosity, creativity, and the social-emotional skills students need to thrive.

Hi! I’m Claire. I hold a B.A. in Social Psychology and am currently completing my Master’s in Psychology at Carleton University, where I focus on topics like learning, mental health, and student well-being. I’ve worked as a T.A. in large undergraduate courses, ran workshops for university students, and collaborated on research projects exploring how stress and school environments affect academic performance.
I firmly believe that learning should never be one-size-fits-all model. Every student comes with their own strengths, pace, and comfort zone. I'm passionate about meeting students where they’re at, then helping them overcome challenges with support and encouragement. When I’m not teaching or doing research, I love rock climbing, transcribing music, and picking up whichever new creative hobby captures my attention. I’m really excited to work with your child to help them learn in ways that feel meaningful and manageable for them.
